Overview:
This client, in business for over 30 years, has
always highly regarded its employees as its greatest
asset, but wondered if it was optimizing the impact
of these resources (many of which were long term,
loyal employees).
Approach:
Comprehensive Business Consulting & Training Corp. (CBCTC)
conducted in-depth interviews with management and
over 80 employees. While meeting with the employees,
it became apparent that there were a wide variety of
perceptions regarding his/her roles within each of
the job titles. While it was obvious that the vast
majority of the employees were dedicated and loyal
to the company, most were unaware of the company’s
mission, vision, and goals, and how their individual
and team contributions to the company were to be
aligned with its overall strategic direction. They
lacked clear objectives and had never received any
formal feedback of their performance or successes
over time.
Result:
Comprehensive Business Consulting & Training Corp. developed and documented over fifty diverse written job descriptions within the organization, along with responsibilities and skills/characteristics which were key to current and or past successes in these positions.
In order to further communicate the Company’s expectations, CBCTC developed and documented a performance appraisal process to be conducted once per year for each employee. This appraisal was to be used as a development tool for employees and an opportunity for managers to communicate and motivate staff to draw upon strengths and devise strategies to improve weaknesses. We had both employee and manager complete the same appraisal packet for the employee, and then use the contents of each as a basis for facilitating a healthy, constructive discussion. CBCTC trained all managers on best practices for delivering the appraisal as well as strategies to handle potential conflict during its roll-out. CBCTC actively participated in several of the “first appraisals” given and often “took the reins” to either further promote employee strengths, or recommend ways to overcome existing obstacles. It has been our experience that most employees want to do a good job, therefore communicating expectations, reinforcing strengths and providing strategies for overcoming weaknesses helped this Company maximize the impact of its greatest asset: its employees.
